How F1 Points Work: The Scoring System, Sprint Races and the Constructors Championship

By The Score Central Editorial Team

Formula 1 awards points to the top 10 finishers in each race, with bonus points available from sprint races and the fastest lap. The driver who accumulates the most points across the full season wins the Drivers Championship. Teams compete in a parallel Constructors Championship based on the combined points of both their drivers.

The Race Points Scale

Points are awarded to the top 10 finishers in each grand prix: 1st: 25 pts, 2nd: 18 pts, 3rd: 15 pts, 4th: 12 pts, 5th: 10 pts, 6th: 8 pts, 7th: 6 pts, 8th: 4 pts, 9th: 2 pts, 10th: 1 pt. Drivers finishing 11th or lower receive no points regardless of how close they were to 10th.
The gap between first and second is 7 points. This means a single race win is worth more than finishing second and fourth combined. Winning races rather than accumulating podiums is the most efficient route to the championship.
  • 1st: 25 pts | 2nd: 18 pts | 3rd: 15 pts | 4th: 12 pts | 5th: 10 pts
  • 6th: 8 pts | 7th: 6 pts | 8th: 4 pts | 9th: 2 pts | 10th: 1 pt
  • No points from 11th place downward
  • A win (25 pts) is worth more than two second-place finishes (36 pts) only when combined with race wins

The Fastest Lap Bonus Point

One bonus point is awarded to the driver who sets the fastest lap of the race, but only if that driver finishes in the top 10. A driver who retires or finishes 11th or lower cannot claim the fastest lap bonus even if their lap time is the quickest of the race.
Teams often pit a driver for fresh tyres in the final laps specifically to chase this point when the championship margin is tight. A single point can determine a championship if two drivers finish the season on equal points.
Has the fastest lap point ever decided a championship?

In the 2021 season, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton finished level on points heading into the final race in Abu Dhabi. Both teams were aware that fastest lap could decide the title if neither pulled ahead. In practice, the race result determined the winner, but the fastest lap point had kept the points gap close across the season.

  • Fastest lap earns 1 bonus point
  • Only available to drivers finishing inside the top 10
  • Teams regularly pit for fresh tyres in the final laps to chase this
  • Cannot be claimed if the driver DNFs

Sprint Race Points

At sprint weekends, a 100km sprint race on Saturday awards points to the top 8 finishers: 1st earns 8 pts, 2nd earns 7 pts, 3rd earns 6 pts, 4th earns 5 pts, 5th earns 4 pts, 6th earns 3 pts, 7th earns 2 pts, 8th earns 1 pt.
There are typically 6 sprint weekends per season, meaning a maximum of 48 extra points are available through sprint races. These points count toward both Drivers and Constructors championships.
  • Sprint top 8 score: 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
  • No fastest lap bonus in sprint races
  • Sprint race grid is set by Sprint Shootout qualifying, not the main race qualifying
  • Maximum extra points available: 48 pts across 6 sprint weekends

The Constructors Championship

Each team accumulates points from both its drivers across every race and sprint. A team whose two drivers finish 1st and 2nd at a race scores 43 points (25 + 18). The Constructors Championship determines the end-of-season prize fund distribution, which is allocated significantly unevenly between teams.
A single position in the Constructors standings can be worth tens of millions of dollars in prize money. This is why teams continue developing their cars hard late in a season even when the Drivers Championship is already decided.
  • Constructors points = combined points of both drivers
  • 1st and 2nd finish = 43 points for the team
  • Constructors standings determine annual prize fund allocation
  • One place in the standings can be worth tens of millions in revenue
