Champions League Format Explained: League Phase, Knockouts and How Teams Qualify

By The Score Central Editorial Team

The UEFA Champions League switched to a new format from the 2024-25 season. The old group stage was replaced by a single league phase involving 36 clubs, each playing 8 matches. The change produces more matches, more varied opponents, and a longer route to the knockout rounds for most teams.

The League Phase: 36 Teams, 8 Matches Each

All 36 clubs are placed in a single standings table and each plays 8 matches: 4 at home and 4 away. Opponents are assigned by a seeded draw, not placed into separate groups. Every team faces 8 different opponents from different pots, meaning all 36 clubs compete in the same standings rather than in isolated mini-leagues.
This single table creates clearer standings throughout the phase and means the later matches have direct implications on qualification for more clubs simultaneously.
How is the opponent draw structured?

Before the league phase begins, all 36 clubs are divided into 4 seeding pots based on their UEFA coefficient ranking. Each club is drawn to face 2 opponents from each pot, resulting in 8 opponents across the 4 pots. This ensures a mix of stronger and weaker opponents for every team while maintaining some balance across the table.

  • 36 clubs in the league phase
  • 8 matches per club: 4 home, 4 away
  • Single standings table rather than separate groups
  • Opponents assigned by seeded draw across 4 pots

How Teams Progress

The top 8 clubs in the standings qualify automatically for the Round of 16. Teams ranked 9th to 24th enter a two-legged playoff round for the remaining 8 slots. Teams finishing 25th to 36th are eliminated from European competition for the remainder of that season.
The playoff round is drawn so that 9th-place plays 24th-place, 10th plays 23rd, and so on. The higher-ranked team has the second leg at home. Playoff winners advance to the Round of 16.
  • Top 8: automatic Round of 16 qualification
  • Positions 9 to 24: two-legged playoffs for the remaining 8 Round of 16 spots
  • Positions 25 to 36: eliminated from European competition
  • Playoff round: 9th faces 24th, 10th faces 23rd, etc.

The Knockout Stage

From the Round of 16 onward, the competition uses standard two-legged knockout rounds. Aggregate scores over 180 minutes decide which team advances. If the aggregate is level after both legs, the match goes to 30 minutes of extra time, then a penalty shootout if still tied.
Away goals no longer count as a tiebreaker. UEFA abolished the away goals rule before the 2021-22 season. A team cannot be eliminated for scoring fewer goals away from home when the aggregate is level.
  • Round of 16, Quarter-finals, Semi-finals: two-legged aggregate knockout
  • Equal aggregate after 180 min: 30-minute extra time, then penalties
  • Away goals rule abolished since the 2021-22 season
  • Final: single match at a pre-selected neutral venue

How Clubs Qualify

Most clubs enter through their domestic league standings. In England, the top 4 Premier League clubs qualify. The number of places allocated to each league is based on UEFA's coefficient ranking, which is calculated from how well clubs from that country have performed in European competition over the previous 5 seasons.
Additional places are reserved for the Champions League title holders and the Europa League holders, provided they did not already qualify through their domestic league. These protected places ensure the holders are always in the competition.
  • England: top 4 in the Premier League qualify
  • Allocation per country based on UEFA coefficient ranking
  • Champions League holders and Europa League holders receive reserved spots
  • Some leagues qualify only their top 2 clubs
